The Oltrepò Pavese: a beautiful area

Castle Cigognola

The Oltrepò Pavese is the large southern territorial area in the province of Pavia, stretching all the way to the Apennines, forming a wedge between the provinces of Alessandria and Piacenza and almost touching on Liguria. The Oltrepò is a marvellous territory, with a narrow flat zone along the river Po in the north, further south a hilly zone dotted with vineyards where 4,000 wine growers operate, and for the rest it climbs to the Pavia Apennines, which rise up to the 1724 metres of Mount Lesima. The hilly area reaches an altitude of 400-500 metres, dotted with castles and medieval villages, with a pleasant variety and richness of landscapes. Vineyards mainly occupy the hilly area, who are thickly furrowed with rows of vines, interspersed with wooded thickets. The Oltrepò Pavese is beautiful, you can still find unspoilt corners, chestnut woods where foxes, wild boar, fallow deer and roe deer take refuge, and many small villages and hamlets.
